Chain / rope pairing by class: 6mm chain · 12mm rope (5–9m) → 6–10mm · 12–16mm (8–13m) → 6–10mm · 12–16mm (12–15m) → 8–13mm · 14–16mm (14m and up). Muir gypsies are cut to match your existing chain size within a class.
Models are grouped by vessel length and motor power class, not exact bolt pattern — it's the right starting point for a like-for-like swap, but deck cut-outs and gypsy sizing can vary between brands even within the same class. Confirm the exact fit with Muir's technical team before you order.
Horizontal windlasses
Horizontal windlasses span a wider spread than vertical units — from small trailer-boat winches to hydraulic commercial gear. Where a brand has no model in a class, or its closest model is undersized, the table says so.

Notes on competitor data
- Renamed — this Maxwell model was previously sold as the HRC8.
- Maxwell publishes this figure as a static hold rating, not a work load.
- Maxwell's own website and dealer technical sheets disagree with each other on this model's max pull and chain range.
- Maxwell publishes three different net weights for this model across its own materials.
- Lofrans lists a single model, the Tigres 1500W, against both the Cheetah and the Jaguar classes.
- Lewmar's largest horizontal windlass is 1000W / 890kg against the Cheetah's 1500W / 1200kg — the closest model available, not a true equivalent.
- Lewmar's horizontal range stops at the H3 — no model above this class.
- No H4 and no commercial horizontal in Lewmar's range — they do not compete in this class.
- Quick's largest horizontal below the Heroes line; undersized against the Cheetah on work load.
- Same Hector HC3 1500W model as the previous class — undersized against the Jaguar.
- Quick also offers the Heroes HR5 3500 for this class: 3500W, 3500kg max load, 500kg rated work load, for 20–24m vessels.
Models are grouped by vessel length and motor power class, not exact bolt pattern — it's the right starting point for a like-for-like swap, but deck cut-outs and gypsy sizing can vary between brands even within the same class. Where a competitor has no model in a class, or their closest model is undersized for it, that is the finding from Muir's own research — not a gap in coverage. Confirm the exact fit with Muir's technical team before you order.

Chain / rope pairing: horizontal and vertical EasyWeigh units take 6–8mm chain and 12–14mm rope across all three brands. Capstan units are typically run on rope alone. Drum winch capacity is set by drum length, not chain/rope diameter — confirm the exact spool-out with Muir's technical team.
Notes on competitor data
- Lofrans does not give its drum winch a distinct model name in its own literature — it is listed generically as "Drum Winch" in their range.
Models are grouped by mechanism type, not exact bolt pattern or deck footprint — it's the right starting point for a like-for-like swap, but deck cut-outs can vary between brands even within the same type. Confirm the exact fit with Muir's technical team before you order.
Drum winches
Drum winches are matched on drum diameter and typical boat size.
Muir is the only brand in this comparison offering a free-fall drum winch. None of the seven competitor brands surveyed — Endurance, Lofrans, Lone Star Marine, Maxwell, Savwinch, Stressfree or Tuff — has an equivalent.

Where a brand lists two motors for the same drum (e.g. "1500/2000W"), that's the manufacturer's own published dual-voltage option, not a range estimate. Drum diameter, not chain/rope size, is what sets a drum winch's class — confirm exact rope/chain capacity with Muir's technical team.
Notes on competitor data
- Lofrans does not give its drum winch a distinct model name in its own literature — the same "Drum Winch" name covers three motor/voltage variants (800W/12V, 1000W/12V, 1000W/24V) across this size range.
- Lone Star Marine publishes two motor options for several models in its GX range. Both figures are the manufacturer's own published spec, not an estimate.
- Maxwell also sells "V2" versions of its Tasman drum winches: a dual-speed motor (15–20% faster rope retrieval), a refined wiring harness and solenoid layout, and a revised motor cover with improved corrosion protection.
Models are grouped by drum diameter and typical boat size, not exact mounting footprint — it's the right starting point for a like-for-like swap, but base dimensions can vary between brands even within the same class. Where Muir has no model in a class, or a competitor has none, that is the finding from Muir's own research — not a gap in coverage. Confirm the exact fit with Muir's technical team before you order.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Windlass Cross-Reference FAQs
What is the Muir equivalent of a Lewmar V2 or a Maxwell RC8?
The Lewmar V2 and the Maxwell RC8-8 both sit in the 8–11 m, 700–800 W vertical class, so the Muir equivalent is the Storm VR/VRC850. The smaller Maxwell RC8-6 matches the Storm VR/VRC600. Use the tables above for any other model.
Will a Muir windlass fit my existing deck cut-out?
Not necessarily. Models are matched on vessel size and motor power, not bolt pattern, so deck cut-outs and fixings can differ between brands in the same class. Download the deck template for your Muir model from Technical Downloads, or ask Muir’s technical team to check your existing cut-out.
Can I keep my existing anchor chain?
Usually, as long as Muir makes a gypsy for your chain’s size and standard (DIN 766, ISO 4565, BBB or High Test). Check it with the Gypsy Compatibility Check, or identify an unknown chain with the Chain Identifier.
Are these exact equivalents?
They are class-for-class matches from Muir’s own research. Where a competitor’s closest model is undersized for a class, the table flags it. Confirm the final choice with Muir or a Muir dealer before you order.
