Understanding Chain Standards
HT, DIN, BBB and ASL all describe how a chain's links are calibrated to fit a windlass gypsy. Two chains of the same diameter can still have a different pitch — so match the standard, not just the size.
HT
High Test — high-tensile chain with roughly double the working load of BBB at the same size
DIN
DIN766 — the German standard, common on European-built windlasses
BBB
Triple B — compact short-link chain, the traditional US windlass standard
ASL
Australian Short Link — to AS2321, Muir’s home-market standard

How do I find my Muir gypsy number?
Your gypsy number is usually stamped on the windlass drum or listed in your Muir product manual. If you can’t locate it, use the Chain Compatibility Checker instead — search by your chain’s size and standard to find matching windlass models.
What's the difference between HT, DIN, BBB and ASL chain?
These are the four calibrated short-link chain standards Muir windlasses accept. HT (High Test) and ASL (Australian Short Link, to AS2321) are the most common in Australia; DIN766 is standard in Europe; BBB is common in the US. Always match the standard, not just the size — two chains of the same diameter can have a different pitch.
My chain isn't calibrated for a windlass — what should I do?
Non-calibrated chain, such as basic proof coil, won’t seat correctly in a gypsy and can slip or jam under load. Use the Chain Selection Guide to identify your chain, or contact our team for help choosing a certified replacement.
Can I use this tool for Mega-line or commercial windlasses?
This compatibility check currently covers the recreational Vertical and Horizontal windlass range. For commercial and Mega-line compatibility, contact our engineering team directly.
