Boat Anchor Windlasses
Every Muir anchor windlass, drum winch and capstan in one place, built in Tasmania since 1968. Vertical windlasses keep the motor below deck for a clean foredeck, horizontal windlasses sit on deck and suit shallow anchor lockers, and drum winches store the rode on the drum when there is no locker at all. All come with a 5-year topworks warranty.

Windlass FAQs
Quick answers to the questions we’re asked most.
What size windlass do I need for my boat?
Start with your boat length, then check the total ground tackle weight (anchor plus chain) against the windlass’s working load. The Windlass Selection Tool does both and lists the Muir models that fit, or see every model by boat length in the Windlass Selection Guide.
Should I choose a vertical or horizontal windlass?
Vertical windlasses put the motor below deck for a cleaner foredeck, but need at least 300 mm of chain fall in the anchor locker. Horizontal windlasses mount entirely above deck, suit shallow lockers, and are simpler to install and service. Locker depth and deck space usually decide it — our selection guide covers both.
12 V or 24 V windlass?
Smaller windlasses usually run on 12 V. Larger motors are normally 24 V, because the lower current keeps cable sizes and voltage drop manageable over a long cable run to the bow. The voltage options for each model are listed on its product page; if you are unsure, ask Muir with your boat’s battery setup.
What chain does a Muir windlass take?
Each windlass is fitted with a gypsy made for one chain size and standard, such as DIN 766, ISO 4565, BBB or High Test. Use the Gypsy Compatibility Check to see which Muir models suit your chain, or the Anchor Chain Identifier if you are not sure what chain you have.
Can I replace my Lewmar, Maxwell or Quick windlass with a Muir?
Yes. The Windlass Cross-Reference groups other brands’ models by size class and shows the Muir built for the same class. Deck cut-outs and gypsy sizing vary between brands, so confirm the exact fit with Muir’s technical team before you order.
